Objections To Raw Food - Time and Money (by Beth)

Often, when I mention Raw and Living food to people, the find a way to distance them selves from the possibility of this way of eating working for them.
A common response is,  “oh – this could not be for me – I love meat (or dairy, cheese, yogurt, milk, cooked food or whatever) to much to ever give it up.”

People also react by voicing objections that create roadblocks to the idea of raw and living foods. They say it will take too much time or it is too expensive or difficult. Let’s address the reality of these objections.

Objection – “Raw and Living Foods will be too expensive”.

Let's look at how much we spend on food every week. If you are eating any animal product; meat, fish, poultry and dairy, and you are conscious of buying organic or 'better quality' products, you are already spending quite a bit of money. If you eat a vegan diet (no animal products), you may still be buying organic produce but the costs are eventually less. I say 'eventually' because to begin a vegan and raw food diet, you may initially eat a lot of food, and raw nuts (which can be expensive). Eventually, embracing the raw and living food diet, we find we eat less; we simply need less food because of the dense nutrition in the living food we eat. I keep giving my mother (who is 83 years old) raw food that I make and over and over again, she says: 'It's very good but I can only eat a little of it” - like that is a bad thing!  We are certainly used to eating a large quantity of food in this culture and eating less is another naturally resulting shift as we eat more living foods. The important and delightful thing is that this result of eating smaller portions is not a ‘portion control’ effort as in most ‘diet plans’ but rather, a natural result of more effective nutrition.

Objection – “Raw food is too difficult and will take too much time”.

How long does it take you to make a salad or to put food into a blender and push the button?  Actually raw food is much quicker and easier then cooking. I do admit that there is a learning curve to changing our orientation to food.  Yes, ‘un-cooking’  has a different rhythm and once you begin sprouting and dehydrating and fermenting, you do learn to plan ahead and take the steps necessary to create different recipes. But your menu is always a personal choice, as in any diet; many people eat raw food much more simply with just a blender or a juicer, a knife and a cutting board. Like any culinary art, you can make this as time consuming and complex or as simple as you want to.

The fact is that learning about Raw and Living food allows you to broaden your approach to what you eat, creating more variety at the same time you create more simplicity. Meanwhile your skills gradually develop to move you easily away from processed foods that create health problems to live foods that give you more energy and vitality. The results are well worth the initial effort to be open to learning.

One evident truth is that you are only as alive as the food you eat, eating live food makes you more alive, and while eating dead food....you can do the math.

Remember - we all have to start somewhere. As in the book - The Skinny Bitch,  Janet ... and MMeell.... say 'every vegan you meet used to be a meat eater'.
